Do Our Old Preferences Still Fit?
A couple weeks ago I watched as Henry was putting on his socks. Pulling them all the way up, folding them over once, then folding over twice. I watched him touch the folds, look at them, think and then roll them all the way back up again. Watching his gears turning all the while.
We all went through that - discovering our preferences. And with probably most things other than those things that were driven in by others that we just simply accepted without asking ourselves if we preferred it that way. Although looking both ways before crossing the street would be a good example of taking someone’s cautious word to heart. Since we prefer not to die. Which I suppose is still us contributing our preference…just thinking out loud and trying to figure it out as I write…
This made me ponder how we develop preferences.
And about changing them. And what inspires that. Likely things like necessity, comfort, safety and security, happiness, growth, age, sage, fluctuating tolerance levels, time…
In light of these reasons, I think we should encourage ourselves, and each other, to review our preferences often. As you can see, I’m not a fan of complacency.
