The Measure of Becoming More

A bit of a self-reflection this morning…

Measuring sticks are helpful and important. By measuring stick I mean places, people, or experiences that we have historically responded to in a certain way, but after a period of growth or time away, when that person, place or experience is re-introduced to us, we notice a significant change in our responses or reactions which signals the positive new learning we’ve achieved. Oof, that was a mouthful. I hope it’s understandable.

Our Saturday night campfire sessions at home at the Wildcraft Forest and my yearly family vacation this past weekend are exactly that for me. A measuring stick.

It’s become really apparent to me that putting my heart into writing for people who are here to listen has been a game changer in seeing the value in my own stories. And even bolstering my appreciation of other people’s stories!

I find myself excited and willing to share around the campfire whereas before I would do 95% of the listening.

I feel myself more engaged with other people’s stories and genuinely wanting to know about their lives and inner workings. And not because it’s fuel for an article, but because somehow I treasure and care even MORE about listening now.

There is also the possibility that following a path that feels like my meaning and purpose has literally sparked new energy and zest for life in me. Thaaaaaat could be it too.

I’m going to spend some time pondering this. I sure am glad for measuring sticks. And the growth that they uncover.
